Summary
As a social scientist, Bree is convinced that much like a trip to the dentist, love can be scheduled. She dismisses the notion of serendipity and soulmates, attributing love to the whims of the hypothalamus. She will pencil in love when she has time for it. Her precise life is going exactly to plan, until a chance encounter with her long-lost summer crush, Tom Harper.
The chemistry between them is still as magnetic as the night they danced under the stars at Camp PAL, swaying and moving together until their lips collided, and moments later, Tom was hauled back to Camp Third Strike, a camp for wayward boys. But he was just a foster kid with nowhere else to go for the summer.
Tom is all wrong for Bree who grew up in Bel Air, or at least that’s what she tells herself as she melts watching a dimple in his cheek appear as he smiles. Can love be reduced to a formula, or is it less predictable? Is Bree just letting her norepinephrine levels surge or is there something more to this connection she feels with Tom?
Review
"Theoretically in Love" by Lisa McKendrick is a captivating romantic comedy that will have you hooked from the first page as it delves into the deeper questions about the nature of love and whether it can truly be reduced to an algorithm. Lisa beautifully explores the unpredictable and enchanting aspects of love, reminding us that sometimes the best things in life can't be scheduled or neatly planned.
Our story is about Bree Kerplowski, the intelligent and pragmatic social scientist, whose well-ordered life takes an unexpected turn when she reunites with her long-lost summer crush and prodigy dancer, Tom Harper. From the moment they meet again, their chemistry ignites just like their incomparable night back at Camp PAL (Peer Advanced Leadership). Despite their undeniable connection Bree insists that Tom doesn't fit into her perfectly planned life. But as she catches glimpses of his dimpled smile and feels her heart melt, Bree begins to question her own theories about love.
The witty banter between Bree and Tom is both hilarious and heartwarming, drawing you deeper into their story. You'll find yourself cheering for them as they navigate the unpredictable path of love, filled with swoony kisses and heart-fluttering moments. And if you liked the movie LaLaLand then you’ll absolutely love Tom! He is a hopeless romantic that will make you fall in love with him through his cheerful cinnamon bun personality, his passionate dancing and his loving affection for Bree.
My favorite lines:
“You turn my Swiss cheese to cheddar…” - Tom
“You make me forget who I am, where I am”- Bree
“Are you saying that I knock you out?” -Tom
“Let your body do the thinking. Let it feel the music, even when there isn’t any” - Tom
Since Bree is a scientist the book has a few words that you might have to look up π And I personally wish that the beginning would have been a little bit more fast paced and for the charming and graceful Adele to be present in one of the most important moments for Bree and Tom. But I liked her development, her support and the role she played in their story.
All in all, grab a cup of Joe, snuggle up, and lose yourself in the pages of this novel that will make you laugh, sigh, and maybe even shed a tear or two. Prepare to be swept away on a journey that will leave you believing in the magic of love, and eagerly awaiting your own serendipitous encounters.
